For the record, Trolls Band Together is a boy band reunion special wearing a kids’ movie costume, and it fires jokes like a confetti cannon with a loose trigger. Plenty land. Plenty splat. Branch was the baby of BroZone, a five-brother act that split after missing Perfect Family Harmony. Now Floyd has been snatched by Velvet and Veneer, a pair of pop wannabes who keep him in a diamond perfume bottle and drain his talent, and Branch has to round up his estranged brothers to save him. The best stops are Spruce, who now goes by Bruce and has an island family, and a hidden mini golf course full of Pop Trolls who never got the memo that the Bergens are friendly now. The colors pop, a few new songs stick, and the franchise is clearly getting tired. It holds a 64% on Rotten Tomatoes and an A CinemaScore. A 5.6 because it’s loud, bright and harmless for the whole couch. $16.13 says somebody in your house starts assigning which brother everyone would be in the family boy band.
What works: The animation is a candy-colored blast, and the jokes about the music business give parents something to laugh at too.
What doesn’t: For every joke that lands another one flops, and this third trip to Troll land shows real franchise fatigue.
Who it’s for: Kids who loved the first two movies, and parents who can still name every member of their favorite boy band.
Spoilers
Viva, the leader of the hidden golf course Trolls, turns out to be Poppy’s long-lost older sister. The brothers finally hit Perfect Family Harmony to break Floyd free, Veneer confesses everything in public, and Branch and Poppy share their first kiss.
Turns out Branch (Justin Timberlake) has a past. As a baby troll he sang in BroZone, a boy band with his four older brothers, until one failed shot at Perfect Family Harmony broke them up. Years later, at the wedding of Bridget (Zooey Deschanel) and King Gristle (Christopher Mintz-Plasse), oldest brother John Dory (Eric André) crashes in with bad news: brother Floyd (Troye Sivan) has been nabbed by Velvet (Amy Schumer) and Veneer (Andrew Rannells), who want to bottle his talent. Branch, Poppy (Anna Kendrick) and Tiny Diamond (Kenan Thompson) hit the road in John Dory's armadillo van, Rhonda. Walt Dohrn directs. Ninety-one minutes, one boy band reunion.
Anyone who still knows the dance to their old boy band song. No judgment.
