Nine Inch Nails give the strongest performance in Tron: Ares, and they never appear on screen. Anything built on the Grid, an orange tree or a soldier, can only survive in the real world for 29 minutes before it falls apart. Julian Dillinger sends his perfect program soldier Ares to grab a "permanence code" that would fix that, while ENCOM’s CEO Eve Kim races to get there first. Ares starts noticing that his boss treats programs as disposable and Eve treats him like a person. Jared Leto plays him quiet and a little wry. The Light Cycle chase through a real city looks amazing, and the neon design is gorgeous. The story is a Terminator rerun with less wit, and the last stretch turns into a loud, crashy monster movie. It made $142.2 million worldwide against a reported budget of $180 million or more. A 5.4 because it looks and sounds great and says almost nothing. $552 says you drive home leaning into every curve like you’re on a Light Cycle, and your passenger notices.
What works: The Nine Inch Nails score is fantastic, the neon design is gorgeous, and Jared Leto’s restrained Ares is surprisingly appealing.
What doesn’t: The story borrows heavily from the Terminator movies without their suspense, and the real-world finale gets loud and messy.
Who it’s for: Anyone who wants a big-screen light show with a pounding score and doesn’t need the plot to do much.
On Flynn’s old Grid, Kevin Flynn himself hands Ares the permanence code, and Athena fades away for good after one last fight. Ares and Eve part ways, and the final scene finds Julian on the wrecked Dillinger Grid, picking up the identity disc of his grandfather’s program, Sark.
Two tech giants, ENCOM and Dillinger Systems, are racing to make digital creations survive in the real world, where right now they only last twenty-nine minutes. Julian Dillinger (Evan Peters) has his secret weapon: Ares (Jared Leto), a program built to be the perfect soldier, who is starting to have ideas of his own. ENCOM's CEO Eve Kim (Greta Lee) is chasing something better, a code left behind decades ago by Kevin Flynn (Jeff Bridges). Julian sends Ares out to get it, whatever it takes. Joachim Rønning directs. One hundred nineteen minutes, very loud Light Cycles.
Anyone who can ride a Light Cycle. Be back in under twenty-nine minutes.
