Uncharted starts with its best scene, Tom Holland dangling off a string of cargo crates spilling out the back of a plane, then spends the rest of its 116 minutes trying to find its way back there. In between, it’s a treasure hunt where the clues pretty much solve themselves. Holland is charming as Nate, a bartender who picks pockets, but he plays it like Spider-Man on spring break, and Mark Wahlberg’s Sully feels like a guy who wandered in from a different heist movie. Their banter never clicks into real buddy chemistry. Sophia Ali’s Chloe is the most fun person in it, mostly because nobody, including the movie, can tell whose side she’s on. Antonio Banderas, as a rich villain with old family money, is barely in it. It made $407.1 million worldwide on a reported $120M budget. A 4.7 because Holland tries hard and the movie plays it safer than a save point. $38.02 says you pick up the game afterward just to see how it’s supposed to feel.
What works: The cargo plane sequence is a genuinely fun bit of chaos, and Sophia Ali makes Chloe the most interesting person on screen.
What doesn’t: Holland and Wahlberg never click as a team, the puzzles solve themselves, and the villains barely register.
Who it’s for: Families who want a breezy treasure hunt on a Friday night, and fans of the games who are curious rather than picky.
Braddock turns on Moncada halfway through and takes over the hunt, and the climax is a fight across two of Magellan’s old ships hanging from helicopters. Sully picks Nate over the gold, and the treasure ends up at the bottom of the sea.
Nathan Drake (Tom Holland) tends bar in New York, picks pockets on the side, and still misses the big brother who left him at an orphanage years ago. Then treasure hunter Victor Sullivan (Mark Wahlberg), who goes by Sully, shows up claiming he once worked with that brother, Sam, chasing the gold lost by Magellan's crew. Nate signs on, and Sully's slippery contact Chloe Frazer (Sophia Ali) joins the hunt. The competition: Santiago Moncada (Antonio Banderas), whose family paid for Magellan's voyage and wants the payout, plus his mercenary Jo Braddock (Tati Gabrielle). Ruben Fleischer directs. One hundred sixteen minutes, one cargo plane with the door wide open.
Anyone with a good sense of direction and a loose relationship with museum rules.
