Will Munny’s first big scenes are falling face first into a hog pen and failing to climb onto his own horse, and that’s the whole thesis of Unforgiven. He isn’t a legend. He’s a retired outlaw with sore knees and pigs that keep beating him in the mud. If you came for a shootout every few minutes, the slow first hour will test you. Gene Hackman’s Little Bill is the scariest kind of villain, a sheriff who thinks he’s the good guy while he builds himself a house with a roof that leaks. Morgan Freeman’s Ned is the heart of it, and you can watch his nerve slip away in real time. Richard Harris drops in as English Bob and owns the middle. Every gunshot costs something here, and the movie makes you sit with it. A 9.3 because it pulls the cowboy myth apart piece by piece and still lands the tensest finale in the genre. $379 says the next time your ceiling drips, you think of Little Bill and his terrible carpentry.
What works: Gene Hackman’s smug, scary sheriff, Morgan Freeman’s quiet decency, and a story that makes every act of violence feel heavy.
What doesn’t: The first hour moves at hog farm speed, and the dime novelist subplot drags whenever the movie cuts back to him.
Who it’s for: Western fans who are tired of heroes in white hats, and anyone who likes their action slow, heavy and earned.
Little Bill captures Ned, who dies in his custody, and puts his body on display outside the saloon. Will rides back into town in the rain, shoots Little Bill and his men, then leaves. A closing title hints he later moved to San Francisco and went into dry goods.
Will Munny (Clint Eastwood) used to be a feared outlaw. Now it is 1880, his wife has passed, and he is failing at raising hogs on a Kansas farm with his two kids. Then a brash young gunman calling himself the Schofield Kid (Jaimz Woolvett) rides up with an offer. In the Wyoming town of Big Whiskey, a cowboy attacked a woman, the local law let him off easy, and her coworkers pooled their money for a reward. Will brings along his old partner Ned Logan (Morgan Freeman). Sheriff Little Bill Daggett (Gene Hackman) hates bounty hunters. Eastwood directs. One hundred thirty minutes, all of them heavy.
Old friends who show up when you call. Leave the guns at the town line.
