Sanjay Vishwanath repairs his own sabotaged rifle minutes before an Olympic final and wins gold, and that’s just the warm-up. Vishwanath & Sons runs 161 minutes and spends plenty of them on things you can see coming, especially a second half that drifts into a stepfamily subplot in Ooty and a climax critics found clumsy. The core is better than the packaging. Suriya plays Sanjay, a rich industrialist who flies home from San Francisco with a baby boy born through surrogacy, to his mother’s total dismay. When little Abhay falls seriously ill, Sanjay has to track down the surrogate, Maddy, a carefree medical student much younger than he expected. The film handles that age gap with more honesty than you’d guess, letting Sanjay stay uneasy instead of smug. Mamitha Baiju gives Maddy real spark, and Radikaa Sarathkumar makes the grandma the warmest person on screen. A 6.7 because it’s sincere and funny and takes the long road everywhere. $8,022 says you get misty during the grandma scenes and blame it on allergies.
What works: Suriya and Mamitha Baiju have easy chemistry, and the film treats surrogacy and the age gap with surprising maturity and warmth.
What doesn’t: It’s long and predictable, and the second half’s family subplot and climax feel contrived next to the livelier first hour.
Who it’s for: Fans of big, emotional family dramas who don’t mind a long sit and a few happy tears.
Sanjay keeps turning Maddy down over the age gap and sends her back to finish medical school, and his mother dies peacefully at home. Years later Maddy graduates as a doctor, he offers her a job at a hospital he’s opening in his mother’s honor, and he answers her question about the age gap with only a smile as the three of them watch a sunset by a lake.
Sanjay Vishwanath (Suriya) is a rich industrialist who also shoots rifles at Olympic level, and the film opens with him going for gold at Paris 2024. Back home, his mother Nirmala (Radikaa Sarathkumar) has one complaint: no wife, no grandkids, end of the family line. So Sanjay returns from one of his San Francisco trips holding a newborn son, Abhay, born through surrogacy. Mom needs a minute. Then a health scare sends Sanjay looking for the surrogate, Maddy (Mamitha Baiju), a medical student way younger than he expected. Venky Atluri directs. One hundred sixty-one minutes, one very surprised grandma.
Anyone who can calm a grandma down after a surprise baby. Shooting coaches welcome.
