A train chase in Spain, a boat chase in Abu Dhabi, a showdown in an ice cave, and War 2 still drags. At 170 minutes, the plot spends so long explaining who is secretly working for whom that the action has to wait its turn. Hrithik Roshan is back as Kabir, an ex-RAW agent turned hired gun, and N. T. Rama Rao Jr. plays Vikram, the officer sent to bring him in, in his first Hindi film. Both are magnetic, and the scenes where they share the screen are the reason this movie exists. Kiara Advani is solid as Kavya, Kabir’s old flame, but the movie is so busy balancing its two heroes that she gets squeezed. The action is big and loud, the second half sags, and the songs drop in at odd moments. IMDb voters settle on a 5.1. A 4.0 because two stars this charismatic deserved a tighter story. $32.69 says you spend the second half guessing who turns on whom next and get at least one right.
What works: Roshan and NTR Jr. have real screen presence together, and the big set pieces look expensive in the best way.
What doesn’t: The screenplay is cluttered with double-crosses, the second half loses steam, and the songs interrupt the momentum instead of adding to it.
Who it’s for: Fans of the YRF Spy Universe and of Hrithik Roshan and NTR Jr. who want spectacle over story.
Spoilers
Vikram turns out to be Raghu, Kabir’s childhood friend who felt abandoned when Kabir joined the army, and the defence minister is secretly working with the cartel. Kabir wins Vikram back to his side, and the two quietly team up to finish off the cartel.
Major Kabir Dhaliwal (Hrithik Roshan), a former RAW agent, now works as a mercenary for hire, and India's spy agency wants him found. The officer brought in to catch him is Major Vikram Chelapathi (N. T. Rama Rao Jr.), from a special unit. Also on the hunt is Wing Commander Kavya Luthra (Kiara Advani), who shares some history with Kabir. Ayan Mukerji directs this sixth chapter of the YRF Spy Universe, and it moves from Japan to Spain and beyond. One hundred seventy-three minutes, zero slow scenes.
Anyone who can keep up with Kabir. Stretch first.
