Nobody remembers the smuggling plot of We’re the Millers, including the movie, which drops it every time Will Poulter opens his mouth. Good call, honestly. Poulter’s Kenny is a sweet, clueless kid who sings TLC with his whole heart, and he walks off with the entire RV. Jason Sudeikis does his smug guy routine at full speed. Jennifer Aniston has the harder job, playing a fake mom who somehow ends up the most grounded person in the vehicle. Nick Offerman and Kathryn Hahn show up as the way too friendly camping couple and nearly steal it back. For every bit that lands, though, there’s a gross-out gag that just sits there waiting for a laugh, and the ending turns sappy fast. Critics gave it 48% on Rotten Tomatoes while opening crowds handed it an A minus, and that gap makes total sense. A 5.8 because it’s dumb, loose and occasionally hilarious, the right pick for a couch and a pizza. $509 says Waterfalls gets stuck in your head tonight and you blame Kenny.
What works: Will Poulter’s Kenny is a comedy MVP, and the fake family has real chemistry once they stop pretending to hate each other.
What doesn’t: Too many gross-out gags fall flat, the crime plot is an afterthought, and the ending goes soft and sappy in a hurry.
Who it’s for: Adults who want a loose road trip comedy for a lazy night, and anyone who has ever been trapped in an RV with relatives.
Don turns out to be a DEA agent, and he helps get the bad guys arrested. The fake Millers end up in witness protection together in the suburbs, which turns the fake family into a real one.
David Clark (Jason Sudeikis) is a small-time Denver dealer who gets robbed and suddenly owes his boss Brad (Ed Helms) a lot of money. Brad's idea of a payment plan: drive to Mexico and bring a shipment back across the border. David figures nobody searches a wholesome family in an RV, so he hires a fake one. His broke neighbor Rose (Jennifer Aniston), a dancer, plays mom. Runaway Casey (Emma Roberts) and sweet, clueless Kenny (Will Poulter) play the kids. Rawson Marshall Thurber directs. One hundred ten minutes, one extremely suspicious RV.
Any family that fights in the RV. You are doing great.
