How Wonder Woman 1984 Performed
movie guru's TLDR

151 minutes, one magic wishing rock, and the rules of that rock change every time the plot needs a push. The opening is a blast: young Diana in an Amazon obstacle course, then grown Diana breaking up a mall robbery with a big grin. After that, the movie stalls. Gal Gadot is still a warm, believable hero, and Chris Pine’s fish-out-of-water routine with eighties fashion is genuinely funny. Pedro Pascal, meanwhile, is acting in a completely different movie as Max Lord, a frantic infomercial guy who gets more unhinged by the scene, and honestly his movie is better. Kristen Wiig’s Barbara has a great setup and a rushed, murky CGI payoff. The finale runs long and talks more than it fights. It made $169.6 million worldwide on a reported $200M. A 4.1 because the heart is there and the story wishes itself into a corner. $89.41 says you strap on a fanny pack this year and Chris Pine pops into your head immediately.

What works: The opening Amazon games and the mall rescue are fun, and Pedro Pascal’s frantic Max Lord is a total blast.

What doesn’t: The wishing stone’s rules shift whenever the plot needs them to, and at 151 minutes the middle drags hard.

Who it’s for: Diehard Wonder Woman fans and anyone who just wants to watch Pedro Pascal go big.

Spoilers

Diana gives up her wish and lets Steve go so she can get her powers back. In the finale, she reaches the whole world through Max Lord’s broadcast with her lasso and convinces everyone to take back their wishes, including Max, who runs home to his son.

Wonder Woman 1984's Blurbs
About me:

It's 1984, and Diana Prince (Gal Gadot) is quietly working at the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C., saving people as Wonder Woman when nobody is looking. A new coworker, shy geologist Barbara Minerva (Kristen Wiig), is thrilled to finally have a friend. Then the FBI sends over a batch of stolen antiques, including an old stone with a Latin inscription that claims to grant wishes. Meanwhile Max Lord (Pedro Pascal), a TV pitchman with a struggling oil company, wants that stone very badly. Patty Jenkins directs. One hundred fifty-one minutes, neon everything.

Who I'd like to meet:

Anyone who reads the fine print before making a wish. Shoulder pads optional.
