World War Z’s zombies stack into a living pyramid to climb a wall, and that’s the coolest idea anyone had for this movie. The swarm scenes are nuts, crowds of the infected pouring over each other like water, a whole city coming apart in minutes. Brad Pitt plays Gerry as the calmest guy in any crisis, a dad in a scarf who keeps his voice level while the planet ends. That works for a while. Problem is, it has the scale of a world tour and the depth of a postcard. The PG-13 rating means the horror happens just out of frame, so everything feels sanded down. The last act shrinks to a quiet medical building, which is tense but feels like a different, much smaller movie. It still made $540 million worldwide on a reported budget of at least $190 million, so nobody at the studio is crying. A 6.4 because the big set pieces rule and the rest is a very expensive shrug. $397 says your next traffic jam, you check the cars behind you twice.
What works: The swarm sequences are huge and genuinely new, especially the wall in Jerusalem, and Brad Pitt keeps the chaos grounded.
What doesn’t: The PG-13 approach sands the horror flat, the characters are thin, and the final act shrinks into a much smaller movie.
Who it’s for: People who want a zombie disaster movie with big set pieces and not much gore, and anyone who likes Brad Pitt in calm dad mode.
Gerry notices the zombies ignore people who are already sick. At a WHO lab in Wales he injects himself with a deadly germ, walks right past the infected, and the trick becomes a camouflage the world uses to fight back.
Gerry Lane (Brad Pitt) used to investigate crises for the United Nations. Now he makes pancakes and drives his wife Karin (Mireille Enos) and their two daughters around Philadelphia. Then a traffic jam turns into total chaos as a fast, frenzied outbreak tears through the city in minutes. Gerry gets his family onto a Navy ship in the Atlantic, but there's a catch: they can only stay if he goes back out to find where the outbreak started. First stop, a military base in South Korea. Marc Forster directs. One hundred sixteen minutes, count to twelve.
Anyone who stays calm in traffic. Gerry could use backup.
