No banter, no cheeky narrator, no lovable crooks trading wisecracks: Guy Ritchie switched off his own personality for this one, and it’s both the point and the problem. Wrath of Man is cold, gray and serious, told in shuffled chapters that jump back and forth until the whole robbery snaps together. Jason Statham plays H like a locked vault. He barely speaks, barely blinks, and when the armored truck gets hit, he handles it with a calm that freaks out his whole crew. Josh Hartnett is funny as a guard who talks big and folds fast. Jeffrey Donovan leads a crew of bitter ex-soldiers with real menace. The trouble is that nobody’s easy to root for, H included, and the ending is so grim it feels like the movie forgot to exhale. It made $104 million worldwide on a reported $40M. A 6.3 because it’s tense, tightly built and freezing cold. $106.05 says the next armored truck you pass on the highway gets a lot more following distance than the law requires.
What works: Statham’s stone-faced menace and the shuffled timeline that makes the big robbery click into place.
What doesn’t: It’s so cold and humorless that nobody is worth rooting for, and the ending is relentlessly bleak.
Who it’s for: Fans of tough heist thrillers who don’t need Guy Ritchie’s usual jokes.
H is really Mason Hargreaves, a crime boss whose son was killed in the earlier robbery, and he took the job to find the inside man. It’s Bullet, the friendly trainer, and when the crew’s big heist collapses and the survivors turn on each other, H tracks down the last one, settles things for his son, and walks away from the money.
A quiet guy named Patrick Hill (Jason Statham), nicknamed H, takes a job as a guard at Fortico, a Los Angeles company that moves cash around in armored trucks. He barely scrapes through the shooting test and keeps to himself. His trainer, Bullet (Holt McCallany), likes him anyway. Then a crew tries to hit H's truck, and he deals with it so calmly and so precisely that his coworkers, including Boy Sweat Dave (Josh Hartnett), start wondering who exactly they hired. Guy Ritchie directs. One hundred nineteen minutes, very few smiles.
Anyone who barely passed the test. Suspiciously barely.
