Every frame of Wuthering Heights could hang in a gift shop, and almost none of it carries the storm Emily Brontë put on the page. Emerald Fennell cares far more about mood and costume than about why these two wreck each other, and the novel’s sharp edges about class get sanded right off. Margot Robbie’s Cathy sprains an ankle spying on her rich neighbors and comes out of it with a marriage proposal, and Robbie commits to every scheme. Jacob Elordi broods hard as Heathcliff and looks the part, but the script hands him moods instead of thoughts. The most interesting person in the story is Nelly (Hong Chau), a quiet servant steering the whole tragedy from the hallway. At 136 minutes, it drags. It made $241.8 million worldwide on a reported $80M, so plenty of people showed up for the gowns. A 4.8 because it’s gorgeous and hollow, and the hollow wins. $18.71 says you reread the first chapter of the novel this weekend just to check what actually happens.
What works: The costumes, sets and colors are stunning, and Nelly, the servant quietly steering events, is a fascinating twist on the story.
What doesn’t: It trades the novel’s ideas about class and cruelty for style, and Heathcliff ends up all brooding with nothing going on underneath.
Who it’s for: Fans of lush period costume dramas who care more about the look of a love story than the book behind it.
Heathcliff comes back rich after five years and marries Isabella to spite Cathy, while Nelly hides his letters from her. Cathy falls gravely ill, Heathcliff rides to Thrushcross Grange too late, and the film ends with him begging her never to leave him in peace.
In 19th-century England, Mr. Earnshaw (Martin Clunes) brings a rescued boy home to Wuthering Heights, and his daughter Cathy names him Heathcliff. The two grow up wild and inseparable. Years later, grown-up Cathy (Margot Robbie) has a sensible plan: marry the wealthy Edgar Linton (Shazad Latif) and lock down her future. Heathcliff (Jacob Elordi) has feelings about that plan. So does Cathy, honestly. Nelly Dean (Hong Chau) sees all of it. Emerald Fennell directs her take on Emily Brontë's novel. One hundred thirty-six minutes, gale-force feelings.
Anyone who loves dramatically and wears it on their sleeve. Bring a coat, it gets windy.
