Nobody laces up a boxing glove in YOLO for a long, long time, and at 129 minutes, you feel every bit of that wait. Jia Ling directs and stars as Du Leying, who has spent about ten years living with her parents, pulling away from everyone. Her cousin Doudou gets her booked on a reality show about finding work, and an argument with her sister Ledan plays out on air. Then her boyfriend and her best friend betray her, and Leying finally moves out. She waits tables, meets Hao Kun, a struggling boxing coach played by Lei Jiayin, and signs up for lessons. It’s a comedic take on the 2014 Japanese film 100 Yen Love, and the rough first half makes you wait for the payoff. Once she commits to training, the movie commits too. It holds an 82% on Rotten Tomatoes. A 6.5 because the comeback feels earned even when the road there is slow. $25.53 says you buy a jump rope tomorrow and it’s hanging on a doorknob by Friday.
What works: Jia Ling makes Leying’s change feel hard-won, and the training stretch gives the movie the energy its first half is missing.
What doesn’t: The first half piles setback on setback for so long that the story drags well before the boxing finally starts.
Who it’s for: Fans of underdog sports movies who care more about the person in the ring than the result on the scorecard.
Leying loses her first professional bout to a former champion, but the crowd, her family and even her sister are won over. When Hao Kun comes back hoping to patch things up, she chooses her own independence instead.
Du Leying (Jia Ling) has spent about ten years at home with her parents, hardly going out and feeling worse every year. Her cousin Doudou (Yang Zi) talks her onto a job-hunting reality show, which ends in a messy public blowup with her sister Ledan (Zhang Xiaofei). Then her boyfriend and her best friend both betray her. So Leying moves out, takes a job waiting tables, and meets Hao Kun (Lei Jiayin), a struggling boxing coach. She signs up for lessons. Jia Ling also directs. One hundred thirty minutes, zero shortcuts.
Anyone who's been stuck on the couch too long. The gym opens at six.
