How You, Me & Tuscany Performed
movie guru's TLDR

The love story in You, Me & Tuscany kicks off with a light case of breaking and entering, and the movie would like you to find that adorable. Anna, a house sitter with a habit of borrowing her clients’ lives, flies to Italy on a whim after one fun night with a guy named Matteo, finds the spare key to his empty villa and moves in. When his mother and grandmother walk through the door, she blurts out that she’s his fiancée. Then she falls for his cousin. Nobody asks the obvious follow-up questions. Halle Bailey makes it work, all nerves and charm, and she’s at her best when Anna lands in the family restaurant’s kitchen and has to cook for real. Regé-Jean Page gets a vineyard and not much else to do. It made $22.5 million worldwide on a reported $18M. A 5.4 because it’s sweet, sunny and full of plot holes you could drive a Vespa through. $89.03 says you lift your own doormat tonight just to check, and feel let down that there’s no villa attached.

What works: Halle Bailey is warm and funny enough to sell a premise that makes no sense, and the kitchen scenes give the movie real flavor.

What doesn’t: The fake engagement survives on everyone being incredibly trusting, and Regé-Jean Page’s Michael is more of a placeholder than a character.

Who it’s for: Anyone who wants a low-stakes rom-com with sunshine, pasta and a happy ending they can see from the opening scene.

Spoilers

Matteo comes home and keeps the fake engagement going, then gets caught kissing his ex, Isabella, and the cousins come to blows at the festival, forcing Anna to confess. Nonna Alessia stops her at the bus station, the family forgives her, and Anna stays in Tuscany with Michael and the restaurant.

You, Me & Tuscany's Blurbs
About me:

Anna Montgomery (Halle Bailey) put her chef dreams on hold and now works as a house sitter, with a habit of trying on her clients' lives along with their clothes. After a fun night out with a charming Italian named Matteo (Lorenzo de Moor), she flies to Tuscany on a whim, makes friends with a cab driver (Marco Calvani), finds every hotel booked, and lets herself into Matteo's empty villa. When his mother and grandmother walk in, Anna panics and claims she is his fiancée. Then she meets his cousin Michael (Regé-Jean Page). Kat Coiro directs. One hundred five minutes, one very fake engagement.

Who I'd like to meet:

Anyone who has ever stayed somewhere they should not have. Put the spare key back.
