Ten years later, the rules are still popping up, Tallahassee is still growling, and Zombieland: Double Tap mostly reruns the old jokes in a nicer house. The gang has set up house in the president’s mansion, a great gag the movie leaves behind fast. Little Rock gets the most interesting plot and barely appears in it. The detour to a peaceful commune called Babylon is slack, a hangout that forgets the zombies. Then Zoey Deutch walks in as Madison, a cheerful survivor who somehow made it through the apocalypse on good vibes alone, and she steals the whole thing. Every scene with her is the movie the sequel should have been. A run-in with two guys who are basically mirror versions of Tallahassee and Columbus is the other bright spot. It made $122.8 million worldwide on a reported $42 to $48 million. A 5.2 because the cast still clicks and the script is stuck on repeat. $91.68 says you make up a survival rule on your next trip to the store and break it in the snack aisle.
What works: Zoey Deutch’s sunny, scene-stealing Madison, and a funny standoff with two mirror versions of the main guys.
What doesn’t: Most of the jokes are reruns, Little Rock is sidelined from her own plot, and the Babylon stretch drags.
Who it’s for: Fans of the first movie who want a hangout with the old crew more than new scares.
Madison, who everyone assumes is turning, was actually having an allergic reaction to nuts. The crew teams up with the Babylon pacifists to fight off a huge horde of smarter zombies, and Columbus and Wichita end up back together.
Ten years into the zombie apocalypse, the crew has moved into the White House. Tallahassee (Woody Harrelson) is playing overprotective dad, Columbus (Jesse Eisenberg) still lives by his list of survival rules, Wichita (Emma Stone) is nervous about how serious things are getting with Columbus, and Little Rock (Abigail Breslin) is sick of being treated like a kid. Then the sisters take off, and Little Rock heads for Graceland with a pacifist named Berkeley (Avan Jogia). Meanwhile, the zombies have evolved, and some of them are smarter now. Ruben Fleischer directs. Ninety-nine minutes, and the rules still apply.
Anyone heading to Graceland with a working car. Rule number two still stands.
