8 Movies I Like Way More Than Everyone Else Does

Hot Take

The movie.guru score is critics plus crowds. The Guru's Take is me. On these eight, I'm way out on a limb, happily.

Number one has a 2.3 movie.guru score. I gave it a 5.7. No regrets.

  1. 8The Ring poster
    The Ring (2002)5.2
Scariest PG-13 movie ever. That blue-gray tint still haunts me.
Naomi Watts watches a cursed tape, the phone rings, and Gore Verbinski makes Seattle drizzle feel like doom. The movie.guru score is 5.5. My Take is 7.4.
  2. 7Starship Troopers poster
The funniest satire of the nineties, disguised as a bug movie.
Paul Verhoeven cast it like a soap opera and shot it like a recruitment ad. That's the joke, and plenty of people missed it. The movie.guru score is 5.2. My Take is 7.9.
  3. 6Constantine poster
    Constantine (2005)4.7
Keanu Reeves in a trench coat versus demons. Peak Keanu.
Critics rank it above 30% of notable movies, yet it pulled $230.9 million worldwide. Tilda Swinton playing an angel is the best casting in it. My Take: 6.8.
  4. 5How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days poster
A romcom built on a secret bet. My kind of movie.
Kate Hudson tries to scare off Matthew McConaughey, who refuses to budge, and it's pure chemistry. Critics rank it above just 23% of notable movies. My Take: 6.2.
  5. 4Zoolander poster
    Zoolander (2001)4.8
The dumbest smart comedy ever made.
Ben Stiller plays a male model who can't turn left, and Will Ferrell's Mugatu is a perfect cartoon. Audiences rank it above just 31% of notable movies. Wrong. My Take: 6.6.
  6. 3Dumb and Dumber poster
    Dumb and Dumber (1994)5.1
Still the funniest road trip movie ever made.
Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels chase a briefcase to Aspen, and every bad idea somehow gets worse. $247.3 million worldwide on a $17 million budget. My Take: 7.4.
  7. 2The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift poster
Best Fast and Furious movie. I'll die on this parking garage.
Forget the plot. Justin Lin made drifting through Tokyo look like ballet, and Sung Kang's Han is the franchise's coolest guy. My Take: 5.4. The movie.guru score: 3.4.
  8. 1Last Seen Alive poster
    Last Seen Alive (2022)2.3
Ninety-five lean minutes, and Gerard Butler sells every one.
His wife vanishes at a gas station, and he becomes a one-man search party. Critics rank it above 5% of notable movies, audiences 17%. Harsh. It's a solid Tuesday night thriller.
Change my mind. Pick the one you'd defend with me, and the one you never would.

$93.46 says you put on Tokyo Drift tonight and call it research.
