Hot Take

Magic, swords and huge IMDb numbers. Critics watched the same movies and shrugged. Here are 8 that get more love than they earned.

Number one made your parents cry, and I'm still checking my watch.

  1. 8The Mummy poster
    The Mummy (1999)5.3
A fun ride everyone remembers as a masterpiece.
7.1 on IMDb from 510,678 fans, but critics rank it above just 41% of notable movies. Nostalgia is carrying it like a sarcophagus.
  2. 7Big Fish poster
    Big Fish (2003)6.9
Gorgeous fairy tales wrapped around a pretty thin story.
7.9 on IMDb from 480,881 fans, but Metacritic says 58. Ewan McGregor charms everyone for 125 minutes while the actual story waits in the car.
  3. 6Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End poster
Bigger budget, longer runtime, and the fun walked the plank.
7.2 on IMDb from 754,854 fans, but Rotten Tomatoes says 43%. Chow Yun-fat is in it, and the movie somehow forgets to use him.
  4. 5The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey poster
One small book, stretched until you could hear it squeak.
169 minutes, and the first hour is dwarves doing dishes. Audiences rank it above 92% of notable movies, critics just 49%. That gap is the size of the Misty Mountains.
  5. 4Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl poster
Jack Sparrow is carrying a very normal pirate movie.
Audiences rank it above 94% of notable movies, critics just 64%. Take Johnny Depp out of its 143 minutes and it's Orlando Bloom being very earnest at a boat.
  6. 3Zack Snyder's Justice League poster
Fans begged for it. It answered with 242 minutes.
Audiences rank it above 96% of notable movies, critics just 49%. The fans won the campaign, and the rest of us lost an entire evening.
  7. 2Return of the Jedi poster
Luke's all-black look rules. A second Death Star does not.
8.3 on IMDb from 1.23 million fans, but Metacritic says 58. Most of that love was locked in before anyone could read a review.
  8. 1The Green Mile poster
    The Green Mile (1999)7.7
Fans say 8.6. Metacritic says 61. I'm with Metacritic.
1.59 million IMDb fans, yet critics rank it above just 57% of notable movies. The movie milks every scene like it's paid by the tear.
Change my mind. Which of these would you still rewatch tonight? Be honest.

$92.94 says you've cried at number one more than once and told nobody.
