Money talks. It doesn't always have taste. These are 2000's top eight worldwide earners, ranked by gross, graded by the movie.guru score.

The number one movie of 2000 scored a 3.7. Yes, really.

  1. 8Scary Movie poster
    Scary Movie (2000)3.4
A cheap parody that out-earned movies with real budgets.
Reported $19M budget, $278M worldwide. The business math is legit. The jokes aged like milk in a hot car, which is why the movie.guru score is 3.4.
  2. 7X-Men poster
    X-Men (2000)7.4
The movie that turned superheroes into a safe bet.
$296.3M worldwide, an A minus CinemaScore, and Hugh Jackman's entire career. The black leather suits look like a wetsuit catalog now. A 7.4: solid, not sacred.
  3. 6Meet the Parents poster
De Niro as a terrifying future father-in-law is a perfect premise.
$330.4M worldwide on a reported $55M budget, 85% on Rotten Tomatoes. Stiller suffering is the engine and it never stalls. The 7.3 is earned. The sequels spent the goodwill.
  4. 5How the Grinch Stole Christmas poster
Jim Carrey carried this whole thing under pounds of green fur.
Highest domestic gross on this list at $264.7M, still a 4.3 on movie.guru. Carrey is nuts in the best way. Whoville is a sticky fever dream with a reported $123M price tag.
  5. 4What Women Want poster
    What Women Want (2000)4.2
One great premise, then the movie forgets what to do with it.
Mel Gibson can hear women's thoughts and the movie mostly plays it as one joke on repeat. 53% on Rotten Tomatoes, a 4.2 here, and it still outgrossed X-Men by $77M.
  6. 3Cast Away poster
    Cast Away (2000)7.5
Tom Hanks plus a volleyball out-acts half of 2000.
88% on Rotten Tomatoes, $429.6M worldwide, a 7.5 on movie.guru. Hanks alone on that beach is gripping. The office stuff before the island drags like a quarterly meeting.
  7. 2Gladiator poster
    Gladiator (2000)8.3
The rare blockbuster that earned every single dollar.
8.3 on movie.guru, 8.5 on IMDb from 1.89 million votes, $465.5M worldwide. Critics gave it a 67 on Metacritic. Audiences gave it their whole heart. The Senate politics drag a bit.
  8. 1Mission: Impossible 2 poster
The biggest movie of 2000 was basically a slow-motion dove commercial.
$546.4M worldwide, the top gross here, on a reported $120 to $125 million budget. Movie.guru score: 3.7. Audiences rate it below 80% of movies. John Woo, you magnificent pigeon wrangler.
Change my mind. Rank these eight from best to worst. Wrong answers only.

$6.71 says someone in the comments defends the doves in #1 like they're a family heirloom.
