Money and quality had a messy breakup in 2016. Here are the eight biggest worldwide grosses, counted down from #8, with the scores that tell on them.

The #1 grossed the most and still splits friend groups in half.

  1. 8Suicide Squad poster
    Suicide Squad (2016)3.4
Margot Robbie deserved a way better movie than this one.
$749.2 million worldwide on a 3.4 movie.guru score and 26% on Rotten Tomatoes. Audiences gave it a B+ CinemaScore, the nicest thing anyone said about it.
  2. 7Deadpool poster
    Deadpool (2016)8.3
The smartest money of the year, and it's not close.
A reported $58M budget turned into $782.8 million worldwide. The villain is forgettable and the plot is a revenge errand. Still an 8.3, because the jokes carry everything.
  3. 6Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them poster
Overrated. A Wizarding World museum tour with extra suitcase.
The movie.guru score says 7.4. Guru's Take says 5.6. It made $816 million worldwide, but only $234 million of that came from domestic audiences.
  4. 5Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice poster
A $250 million sulk with a great Batman stuck inside.
Reported $250M budget, $874.4 million worldwide, 28% on Rotten Tomatoes and a B CinemaScore. Ben Affleck's Batman was the right call in the wrong movie.
  5. 4The Secret Life of Pets poster
    Fine. Aggressively, profitably fine.
Out-grossed Batman v Superman with $875.7 million worldwide on a reported $75M budget. A 5.7 score means you laughed twice and forgot the plot by dinner.
  6. 3The Jungle Book poster
    The Jungle Book (2016)8.6
The best-reviewed movie here, and somehow nobody brings it up.
94% on Rotten Tomatoes and an 8.6 movie.guru score. Bill Murray as Baloo is perfect casting. The animals look a little too real to be cuddly.
  7. 2Rogue One: A Star Wars Story poster
The best Star Wars movie since the original trilogy.
$532.2 million domestic, the biggest domestic gross on this list, and an 8.3 score. The last act earns it. The first hour is a planet-hopping slog.
  8. 1Captain America: Civil War poster
Best of the bunch. And Team Iron Man was right.
$1.155 billion worldwide and an 8.7 movie.guru score, top of this list both ways. The airport fight is a toy box. The villain's plan is a stretch.
Change my mind. Rank these eight from most to least deserving of their box office.

$1,163 says someone in the comments defends Batman v Superman with a paragraph longer than this entire list.
