Ranked

The decade of shared universes, ranked from bad to worst. Four are superhero movies. None needed to be this long.

Number one sold the best trailer of the decade, then released the movie.

  1. 8The Hangover Part II poster
The same movie again, just in Bangkok.
$586.8 million worldwide on an $80 million budget, so copy and paste worked. Critics rank it above just 21% of notable movies. Even the monkey seems to know it's a rerun.
  2. 7Passengers poster
    Passengers (2016)4.0
The trailer hid the plot for a reason.
Critics rank it above just 18% of notable movies, yet IMDb still has it at 7.0. Two huge stars on a gorgeous spaceship, and the premise turns it into a 116-minute group-chat argument.
  3. 6Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides poster
Mermaids and Blackbeard, and somehow zero spark.
$1.05 billion worldwide on a reported $410.6 million budget, and a 3.4 Guru's Take. The fountain of youth hunt makes 137 minutes feel ancient.
  4. 5Justice League poster
    Justice League (2017)3.9
Remembered mostly for one digitally erased mustache.
$661.3 million worldwide on a $300 million budget, and a 3.9 movie.guru score. It runs 120 minutes, and Superman's upper lip still looks like it's buffering.
  5. 4Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker poster
So messy, even the critics liked it more than fans.
$1.08 billion worldwide on a reported $593.7 million budget. Audiences rank it above just 23% of notable movies. It spends 141 minutes apologizing for the last movie.
  6. 3Venom poster
    Venom (2018)4.0
A bad movie with an elite lobster tank scene.
Critics rank it above just 13% of notable movies, and it still grossed $856.1 million worldwide. Tom Hardy bickering with the goo in his head is a comedy nobody planned.
  7. 2Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice poster
It's called Batman v Superman, and the v takes forever.
800,801 IMDb votes, the most on this list, and critics rank it above just 19% of notable movies. Jesse Eisenberg's Lex Luthor feels like a startup founder who skipped his nap.
  8. 1Suicide Squad poster
    Suicide Squad (2016)3.2
Great trailer, great soundtrack, edited in a blender.
$749.2 million worldwide on a $175 million budget, and the lowest movie.guru score here, a 3.2. Margot Robbie shows up ready for a great movie. The edit turns it into a 123-minute playlist.
Change my mind. Rank these yourself, worst first.

$32.79 says you still have the Suicide Squad soundtrack on a playlist you swear is ironic.
