Long movies, real scores, zero guilt. Every pick here wants your whole afternoon, and the numbers say it pays you back.

Number one is new, and it just bumped some very famous hobbits.

  1. 8Wicked poster
    Wicked (2024)8.6
Half a musical, and it still earns the couch time.
An A CinemaScore and $474.98 million domestic. Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande carry it. The catch: it stops mid-story, so you're signing up for Part Two.
  2. 7Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl poster
Johnny Depp turned a theme park ride into a classic.
Critics shrugged with a 63 Metacritic. Audiences didn't: IMDb 8.1 on 1.35 million votes. Geoffrey Rush chews every plank, and the finale still drags anchor.
  3. 6Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban poster
The best Potter movie, full stop.
$811.6 million worldwide, less than Goblet of Fire, and still the better movie. Alfonso Cuarón made Hogwarts moody. movie.guru score 8.9, Guru's Take 9.0.
  4. 5Avatar poster
    Avatar (2009)8.5
The plot is thin. The box office is not.
$2,923,710,708 worldwide, the biggest gross here. The story is familiar, the dialogue is cardboard, and Pandora still deserves the biggest screen you own.
  5. 4The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring poster
Slowest of the trilogy, and the perfect Sunday starter.
A 92 Metacritic, plus an A− CinemaScore, the only minus in the trilogy. Ian McKellen does the heavy lifting while the hobbits learn what walking means.
  6. 3The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers poster
The middle chapter nobody gets to skip.
No beginning, no ending, still 95% on Rotten Tomatoes. Helm's Deep is the reason, Viggo Mortensen is the bonus, and $945 million worldwide says everyone stayed.
  7. 2The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King poster
Too many endings. Still the best of the three.
A+ CinemaScore, 94 Metacritic, IMDb 9.0 on 2.2 million votes. The finale lingers like a guest hunting for their coat, and you forgive it every time.
  8. 1The Odyssey poster
    The Odyssey (2026)9.5
Nolan's Odyssey beats every Lord of the Rings. Fight me.
A 9.5 movie.guru score, top of this list, plus $1.796 billion worldwide. Matt Damon sails, Tom Holland tags along. My Guru's Take is a cooler 8.6, so I'm arguing with myself.
Change my mind. Rank these from best to worst use of a Sunday. Wrong answers only.

$347.61 says you start Fellowship at noon and are still on the couch when Return of the King finally lets you go.
