Watch List

You wore out the tape. You quoted it at recess. You haven't seen it in years. Here are eight 90s favorites, and how they hold up now.

Number one isn't the best movie here. It's the one you'll rewatch most.

  1. 810 Things I Hate About You poster
Heath Ledger singing on the bleachers is the whole decade.
Shakespeare in a 1999 high school, made for a reported $13 million, 97 minutes long. Julia Stiles is sharper than the script. Metacritic gives it a 70.
  2. 7Rush Hour poster
    Rush Hour (1998)6.5
Jackie Chan does the stunts. Chris Tucker does the talking.
98 minutes, no fat. Audiences rank it above 80% of notable movies, critics 45%. Stay for the blooper reel, which might be funnier than the movie.
  3. 6Mrs. Doubtfire poster
    Mrs. Doubtfire (1993)6.2
Robin Williams improvising is the real special effect.
The custody story lands way harder now that you're the adult. $441.3 million worldwide. Critics rank it above just 41% of notable movies.
  4. 5Batman Returns poster
    Batman Returns (1992)7.0
The Penguin gave a whole generation nightmares, and that's a compliment.
Tim Burton made a toy-selling sequel that's mostly snow, sewers and sadness. 126 minutes, and Michelle Pfeiffer's Catwoman is still the best one ever.
  5. 4Jumanji poster
    Jumanji (1995)5.0
The CGI monkeys aged terribly. The drums still give you chills.
Metacritic gave it a 41. Audiences rank it above 71% of notable movies, and they're right. Robin Williams, a stampede through the living room, and 104 minutes that fly.
  6. 3Groundhog Day poster
    Groundhog Day (1993)8.1
Bill Murray's best movie, and it's secretly a philosophy class.
Bill Murray is stuck reliving one February day for 101 minutes, and it never gets old. The movie.guru score is 8.0. My Guru's Take is 9.1.
  7. 2Jurassic Park poster
    Jurassic Park (1993)8.8
That rearview mirror shot is still the decade's best gag.
$1.1 billion worldwide on a reported $56 to $63 million budget. Laura Dern digs through dino droppings without blinking, and Wayne Knight's Nedry ruins everything over one bad deal.
  8. 1Independence Day poster
More rewatchable than Jurassic Park. I'm not taking questions.
A 7.1 movie.guru score, and it doesn't matter. Bill Pullman's big speech, Jeff Goldblum's nervous genius, $817.4 million worldwide, and 145 minutes you'll happily watch every July.
Change my mind. Which of these did you wear out on VHS? Be specific.

$1,946 says you rewatch number one this weekend and stand up during the speech.
