8 Overrated Dramas Everyone Pretends to Love

Hot Take

Big feelings, bigger fan ratings, and a balanced score that keeps saying fine. These eight get rewatched out of habit, not greatness.

Number one has Morgan Freeman in it, so I'm already losing this argument.

  1. 8Passengers poster
    Passengers (2016)4.0
A space romance built on one extremely selfish decision.
Metacritic says 41, yet 507,043 IMDb voters gave it a 7.0. A reported $110 to $150 million spaceship, and the love story runs on red flags.
  2. 7The Butterfly Effect poster
The ultimate high school DVD, and it should stay there.
562,693 IMDb fans give it a 7.6. Rotten Tomatoes says 34%, and the movie.guru score is a 4.8. Rewatch it as an adult and the cracks show fast.
  3. 6The Great Gatsby poster
Baz Luhrmann threw a party and forgot to invite the story.
A reported $105 to $190 million, 143 minutes of confetti, and critics rank it above 38% of notable movies. 651,378 IMDb fans gave it a 7.2 for the toast alone.
  4. 5Unbreakable poster
    Unbreakable (2000)5.7
Gorgeous camera work wrapped around a lot of murmuring.
472,563 IMDb fans give it a 7.3. The movie.guru score is a 5.5, the exact median. Bruce Willis spends 106 minutes murmuring through doorways and train windows.
  5. 4Devil's Advocate poster
Charlize Theron gives the real performance, and the movie sidelines her.
144 minutes, 7.5 on IMDb from 453,845 voters, and a movie.guru score of 6.1. The legal thriller half works. The fire and brimstone half is pure camp.
  6. 3Watchmen poster
    Watchmen (2009)5.8
The opening credits are the best movie in it.
A reported $130 to $150 million, and the opening montage beats everything that follows. 617,657 IMDb fans give it a 7.6. Critics rank it above 46% of notable movies.
  7. 2The Prestige poster
    The Prestige (2006)7.3
Brilliant once. The rewatch is where the magic dies.
1.63 million IMDb fans rate it 8.5. Metacritic says 66, the movie.guru score 7.1. Two magicians feud for 130 minutes, and it only truly works the first time.
  8. 1Seven poster
    Seven (1995)7.5
Morgan Freeman is perfect. Brad Pitt is in another movie.
8.6 on IMDb from 2.07 million votes, the most on this list. Critics rank it above 72% of notable movies. Underneath, it's grumpy veteran meets hothead rookie, a setup you've seen plenty.
Change my mind. Which one would you defend in court? One sentence, no crying.

$6,377 says you typed 'you just didn't get it' and then deleted it.
