Millions of IMDb votes, big twists, bigger reputations. The scores say these mysteries are more famous than good. Counting down.

Number one has nearly 1.7 million IMDb fans. Every single one will come for me.

  1. 8The Village poster
    The Village (2004)3.6
A creepy forest premise strangled by its own reveal.
300,417 IMDb votes, a C CinemaScore, and a 3.6 movie.guru score. Joaquin Phoenix and Bryce Dallas Howard deserved a script that trusted the woods more than the gimmick.
  2. 7Bird Box poster
    Bird Box (2018)4.7
The blindfold went viral. The movie never earned it.
428,837 IMDb votes, half from people who saw the memes first. Sandra Bullock carries it hard, but a 4.7 movie.guru score says the monster rules never add up.
  3. 6The Da Vinci Code poster
A puzzle movie where the puzzles are the boring part.
$801 million worldwide and a 25% on Rotten Tomatoes. Tom Hanks mostly explains paintings under that hair. The movie.guru score is 4.1. Ian McKellen is the only one having fun.
  4. 5Vanilla Sky poster
    Vanilla Sky (2001)4.5
Audiences gave it a D minus. They weren't wrong.
Tom Cruise, Penélope Cruz, Kurt Russell and a reported $68 million budget, all orbiting a plot that keeps stopping to explain itself. 312,963 IMDb votes, 4.5 movie.guru score.
  5. 4The Ring poster
    The Ring (2002)4.8
Scariest VHS tape ever made. Still not a classic.
408,076 IMDb votes and a 7.1 rating, but the movie.guru score sits at 4.8. Naomi Watts is great. The tape is scarier than everything that happens after it.
  6. 3Seven Pounds poster
    Seven Pounds (2008)5.7
A tearjerker that mistakes withholding information for depth.
IMDb 7.6, Rotten Tomatoes 26%. Audiences beat 79% of movies, critics beat 13%. Will Smith cries beautifully. The gap between those two numbers is the entire argument.
  7. 2Saw poster
    Saw (2004)5.5
Legendary hook, wobbly movie wrapped around it.
518,662 IMDb votes and a 7.6 rating on a reported budget around $1 million. The movie.guru score is 5.5, dead median. James Wan's idea rules. Some of those line readings do not.
  8. 1Shutter Island poster
    Shutter Island (2010)6.2
Scorsese's most overrated movie. Yes, really.
1,691,744 IMDb votes and an 8.2, but a 6.2 movie.guru score and a C+ CinemaScore. Great fog, great DiCaprio, and a mystery that waves its hand way too early.
Change my mind. Rank these from most to least overrated. Wrong answers will be screenshotted.

$319.47 says you scroll straight to number one, get mad, and type "but the ending" before reading a single why.
