Millions of votes. Thousands of rewatches. Scores that say otherwise. These romances coast on nostalgia, star power and one good song. The numbers don't swoon.

The last one is a holiday tradition. That's exactly why you'll fight me.

  1. 8Yes Man poster
    Yes Man (2008)5.1
Jim Carrey is great. The romance is a gimmick.
410,266 IMDb votes for a movie critics gave 45% on Rotten Tomatoes. Carrey brings the rubber face. The love story is one word stretched thin.
  2. 7Vanilla Sky poster
    Vanilla Sky (2001)4.5
Opening-night crowds gave it a D minus. They were right.
Cameron Crowe built a dream puzzle and stapled a romance to it. CinemaScore D minus, 41% on Rotten Tomatoes, and 312,963 IMDb voters still call it deep.
  3. 6Passengers poster
    Passengers (2016)4.2
A thriller premise wearing a romance costume.
Chris Pratt and Jennifer Lawrence on a spaceship with a reported $110 to 150M budget. Critics gave it 30%. The first-act choice should have been the horror movie.
  4. 550 First Dates poster
    50 First Dates (2004)5.0
Sweet idea, smothered by gags that aged like milk.
Sandler and Drew Barrymore have real chemistry. Then the side jokes keep barging in. 422,101 IMDb votes, 45% on Rotten Tomatoes, movie.guru score 5.0.
  5. 4How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days poster
Two liars falling in love is not a love story.
Kate Hudson and Matthew McConaughey are charming enough to hide it. Critics beat just 23% of movies, audiences beat 61%. That gap is pure McConaughey.
  6. 3The Proposal poster
    The Proposal (2009)5.2
Sandra Bullock deserved a sharper script than this.
Bullock and Ryan Reynolds bring the bounce. The plot runs on sitcom autopilot. $317 million worldwide off a reported $40M budget, and Rotten Tomatoes still sits at 45%.
  7. 2The Great Gatsby poster
The fanciest party ever thrown for a hollow movie.
Baz Luhrmann spent a reported $105 to 190M on confetti. DiCaprio is great. Tobey Maguire narrates like a book report. 651,378 IMDb votes, movie.guru score 5.2.
  8. 1Love Actually poster
    Love Actually (2003)6.0
Too many storylines, not nearly enough movie.
IMDb 7.5 from 585,665 voters, but critics beat only 42% of movies. Guru's Take: 5.6. It's a holiday card with a runtime and a soundtrack doing the heavy lifting.
Change my mind. Rank these from most to least overrated. Wrong answers only.

$1,147 says you scroll straight to #1 and type "it's a Christmas classic" before reading anything else.
