World War Z is a dad outrunning the end of the world. These eight bring the same panic, swarms and bad news arriving faster than anyone can run.

Number one has zero zombies, zero gore, and it's the best pick here.

  1. 8Exit 8 poster
    Exit 8 (2025)7.0
Exit 8 is World War Z's quiet lab scene, feature length.
Same creeping dread of a corridor where one wrong move ends you. A man stuck in a looping subway passage. Critics loved it at 91% on RT. Audiences were cooler.
  2. 7Prey poster
    Prey (2022)7.6
Prey outruns most blockbusters on a $65M reported budget.
Like Gerry Lane, one outmatched survivor reads the threat smarter than everyone with bigger weapons. 94% on Rotten Tomatoes. The story is thin, but the hunt never stops.
  3. 6Avengers: Endgame poster
Endgame is the best post-apocalypse movie nobody calls one.
It starts where World War Z's fears end up: half the world gone, survivors scrambling. $2.94 billion worldwide. Guru's Take is just 7.8 because the first hour drags.
  4. 5The Odyssey poster
    The Odyssey (2026)9.5
Nolan's Odyssey is World War Z's plot with a boat.
A dad fighting his way home through a world that wants him gone. Matt Damon, $1.8 billion worldwide, 9.5 movie.guru score. Guru's Take is 8.6 because it's bloated.
  5. 4Jaws poster
    Jaws (1975)9.7
    Jaws invented the officials-ignore-the-outbreak plot.
World War Z's early chaos happens because nobody listens. Same here, plus a beach. $490.7 million worldwide on a $9M reported budget. The shark barely shows up, and that's the trick.
  6. 3Godzilla Minus One poster
The best disaster movie of the decade came from Japan.
Like World War Z, it shows a country-sized catastrophe through one regular guy. 99% on Rotten Tomatoes. The human drama gets a little soapy between attacks.
  7. 2Aliens poster
    Aliens (1986)9.4
Aliens is the swarm movie World War Z wanted to be.
Soldiers, a bad plan and a horde that shows up all at once. 9.4 movie.guru score on an $18.5M reported budget. The first hour is slow, then it never lets go.
  8. 1North by Northwest poster
The best World War Z follow-up has zero zombies.
One guy chased across a whole country by people who want him gone, never stopping to breathe. 9.7 movie.guru score, 98 on Metacritic. The romance is weirdly stiff.
Change my mind. Rank these from most to least zombie-adjacent. Wrong answers encouraged.

$1,553 says you finish North by Northwest and type "okay fine" in the comments before the credits end.
