Josh Brolin's worst-scoring list opens with True Grit at 8.2. That's a bottom eight most actors would frame. Then it drops. A lot.

Number one is dead last on paper. I'm defending it anyway.

  1. 8True Grit poster
    True Grit (2010)8.2
A Coen Western in a bottom eight. Brolin's spoiled.
95% on Rotten Tomatoes and $252.3 million worldwide, yet here it is. Brolin plays the man everyone's hunting and still gets out-scened by Jeff Bridges' eyepatch.
  2. 7The Goonies poster
    The Goonies (1985)8.0
Critics still owe this one an apology.
Metacritic 62, but it beat 93% of movies with audiences. $64.3 million domestic on a reported $19M budget, and every kid who saw it still quotes it.
  3. 6Deadpool 2 poster
    Deadpool 2 (2018)7.7
Cable rules. The movie around him is overrated.
CinemaScore A and $785.9 million worldwide, but the Guru's Take is 6.6. Brolin plays it stone-faced while Reynolds riffs on literally everything in the room.
  4. 5Everest poster
    Everest (2015)6.8
Underseen, and better than its domestic number says.
CinemaScore A, $203.4 million worldwide on a reported $55M budget, but only $43.5 million domestic. America skipped it. Brolin is steady and the cold looks painfully real.
  5. 4Men in Black 3 poster
    Men in Black 3 (2012)5.5
Brolin doing young Tommy Lee Jones is the whole movie.
A reported $215 to $250 million budget for a perfectly median 5.5 score. The only thing worth that money is Brolin's Agent K impression, which is uncanny.
  6. 3Whalefall poster
    Whalefall (2026)5.5
A whale movie this wild should not play it this safe.
Reported $60M budget, $15.3 million domestic, and critics and audiences split almost dead even at 51 and 49. Big premise, small swing.
  7. 2Gangster Squad poster
    Gangster Squad (2013)4.1
All that cast, all those hats, a 30% on Rotten Tomatoes.
Brolin, Ryan Gosling, Emma Stone and Nick Nolte, and it beat only 18% of movies with critics. Audiences gave it a B+ anyway. Gorgeous suits, no pulse.
  8. 1The Dog Stars poster
    The Dog Stars (2026)3.8
Dead last, and still better than Gangster Squad. Fight me.
A 3.9 score and a C+ CinemaScore, but the Guru's Take is 4.6, above Gangster Squad's 4.3. Ridley Scott sci-fi with Elordi and Brolin beats pretty hats.
Change my mind. Rank these from most to least underrated Brolin. Wrong answers only.

$643.17 says the first reply is someone typing "THE GOONIES AT 7?" in all caps.
