Ranked

Ranked purely by movie.guru score, so critics and audiences picked the order. I just wrote it up. Every movie here scores 9.2 or higher.

Number one is rated PG, and it still wrecks grown adults.

  1. 8A Clockwork Orange poster
Brilliant, and you only need to watch it once.
Made for $1.3 million, and Malcolm McDowell's grin is still more unsettling than most monsters. Audiences rank it above 99% of notable movies, which is wild for something this hard to sit through.
  2. 7Aliens poster
    Aliens (1986)9.3
The rare sequel that switched genres and won anyway.
Alien was a haunted house. James Cameron made it a war movie for $18.5 million and still got a 93% on Rotten Tomatoes. Sigourney Weaver carries all 137 minutes.
  3. 6Avengers: Endgame poster
A three-hour curtain call built strictly for the faithful.
Grossed $2.94 billion worldwide and needs a decade of setup to land. Fans get 181 minutes of catharsis. Newcomers get a $356 million family reunion.
  4. 5The Empire Strikes Back poster
Proof the second movie can be the best one.
Irvin Kershner took over and gave Star Wars snow, swamps and actual feelings. 8.7 on IMDb from 1.53 million votes, and an A+ CinemaScore. Yoda alone justifies the $18 million budget.
  5. 4Back to the Future poster
A screenwriting class disguised as a skateboard movie.
Michael J. Fox's Marty has to get his teenage parents together or erase himself, and somehow it's a comedy. 116 minutes, zero filler, and critics and audiences both put it above 95%.
  6. 32001: A Space Odyssey poster
Gorgeous, glacial, and nobody agrees on what it means.
149 minutes with long stretches of no talking, yet audiences put it above 99% of notable movies. Made for $10.5 million in 1968, and the effects hold up better than most.
  7. 2Alien poster
    Alien (1979)9.5
A slasher movie in a spacesuit, and nothing has topped it.
Ridley Scott keeps the monster in shadow and lets a tired space crew bicker about bonuses. Made for $8.4 to $14 million, 8.4 on IMDb from 1.08 million votes.
  8. 1E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial poster
No lasers, no battles, and it still beats every spaceship here.
99% on Rotten Tomatoes, an A+ CinemaScore, $797.3 million worldwide. IMDb voters only give it a 7.9, which says more about IMDb voters than Elliott.
Change my mind. Which one would you drop for Blade Runner? Choose carefully.

$833.71 says you look up what a DeLorean costs before bed.
