Ranked

Everyone says the 90s were perfect. Everyone is mostly right. These eight famous movies are the receipts for the mostly, ranked by movie.guru score.

Number one has 941,231 IMDb votes and a lot of explaining to do.

  1. 8Casino poster
    Casino (1995)7.4
Goodfellas goes to Vegas and forgets to leave.
178 minutes, the longest here. A 7.1 movie.guru score is above average, so this is a gentle roast. Sharon Stone outplays De Niro and Pesci both.
  2. 7Back to the Future Part III poster
The Old West detour proves the trilogy should've stopped at two.
Metacritic gives it a 55, and critics rank it above just 53% of notable movies. Doc Brown falls in love, Marty plays cowboy, and 118 minutes go by at horse speed.
  3. 6Léon: The Professional poster
Natalie Portman's debut is the real reason anyone remembers it.
8.5 on IMDb from 1.37 million votes, but only 64 on Metacritic and a 6.9 movie.guru score. Jean Reno does a lot with very few words, and 110 minutes go fast.
  4. 5Fight Club poster
    Fight Club (1999)7.0
Helena Bonham Carter is the best part, and nobody says so.
$102.4 million worldwide on a reported $63 to $65 million budget, and a 6.7 movie.guru score. 139 minutes, and the second hour runs on fumes.
  5. 4Mission: Impossible poster
Brian De Palma made a spy movie about floppy disks.
Critics rank it above 47% of notable movies. Tom Cruise dangling over that white floor is iconic. The rest of its 110 minutes is a confusing hunt for a disk.
  6. 3The Fifth Element poster
Gorgeous, loud and dumb, in that exact order.
Metacritic gives it a 52. IMDb fans give it a 7.6. The blue alien opera singer is the scene everyone remembers, and it's a tiny slice of 126 minutes.
  7. 2The Mummy poster
    The Mummy (1999)5.3
Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz could sell a sandstorm.
Metacritic gives it a 49 and the movie.guru score is a 5.3. My Guru's Take is a 7.0, because it's the rare blockbuster where the leads actually seem to like each other.
  8. 1Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace poster
The CGI aged faster than anything else from 1999.
941,231 IMDb votes, a 5.2 movie.guru score, and the lowest of these eight. Whole scenes are actors talking to tennis balls, and you can feel it.
Change my mind. Which of these would you still watch on a sick day?

$4,962 says you already rewatched The Mummy this year and would do it again tonight.
