Hot Take

Hundreds of millions at the box office, middling scores, and nothing anyone repeats. These eight made bank and vanished. Prove me wrong.

Number one made over a billion dollars. Quote one line from it. I'll wait.

  1. 8Hancock poster
    Hancock (2008)4.1
Will Smith made a superhero movie and nobody remembers it.
$629.4 million worldwide, and only 92 minutes long. The train scene is the one thing anyone can describe. Critics rank it above just 28% of notable movies.
  2. 72012 poster
    2012 (2009)3.5
It destroys the whole planet and leaves no mark.
$791.2 million worldwide for 158 minutes of John Cusack outdriving earthquakes in a limo. A 3.7 movie.guru score. Name one other character. Exactly.
  3. 6The Da Vinci Code poster
The book everyone read became a movie nobody rewatches.
$801.3 million worldwide, then silence. 149 minutes of Tom Hanks explaining paintings at a jog. Critics rank it above just 19% of notable movies.
  4. 5Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen poster
The loudest movie of 2009, and the quietest legacy.
$836.3 million worldwide, a 3.0 movie.guru score, and my Guru's Take is a 2.3, the lowest here. All anyone kept from its 149 minutes is ringing ears.
  5. 4Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull poster
Everyone remembers the hat. Nobody remembers the plot.
$786.6 million worldwide. Critics were kind, ranking it above 62% of notable movies, but audiences stop at 29%. Cate Blanchett's accent does the heavy lifting for 122 minutes.
  6. 3Transformers poster
    Transformers (2007)6.5
The best Transformers movie, and you still can't quote it.
$709.7 million worldwide, an A CinemaScore, and audiences rank it above 80% of notable movies. 144 minutes of Shia LaBeouf yelling and robots unfolding. Not one line survived.
  7. 2Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End poster
A $300 million budget and not one moment you remember.
$961.7 million worldwide and 169 minutes long. Critics rank it above just 28% of notable movies. Everyone betrays everyone so often it stops meaning anything.
  8. 1Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest poster
Every Pirates quote you know is from the first one.
$1.07 billion worldwide and 839,031 IMDb votes. Bill Nighy's Davy Jones is a legit great villain. Nobody quotes him. They quote the first movie instead.
Change my mind. Quote any of these from memory. No googling. Go.

$62.09 says you're already googling lines from number one to prove me wrong.
