Every one of these clocks in at 95 minutes or less. No bloated second act, no ten endings. Press play at nine, sleep like a functioning adult.

Audiences gave #1 a C. Movie guru gives it an 8.4.

  1. 8Source Code poster
    Source Code (2011)7.4
The smartest sci-fi thriller you forgot existed.
92% on Rotten Tomatoes and $147M worldwide. Jake Gyllenhaal reliving one train ride is a mystery box that actually opens. The B CinemaScore says audiences blinked.
  2. 7Ready or Not poster
    Ready or Not (2019)6.7
Its 6.7 score is an insult to wedding dresses.
Reported $6M budget, $57.6M worldwide. Samara Weaving versus her brand new in-laws is the most fun hide-and-seek ever got. Guru's Take: 7.6, not 6.7.
  3. 6A Quiet Place poster
    A Quiet Place (2018)8.0
Best bang for the buck in 2010s horror.
Reported $17M budget, $341M worldwide. Krasinski makes your snack bag the loudest thing in the room. Its audience score beats only 69% of movies, so somebody crunched.
  4. 5Gravity poster
    Gravity (2013)8.6
Thin script, flawless ride. Biggest screen you own, tonight.
Metacritic 96 and $739M worldwide. The dialogue floats around like loose debris, but the camera never lets you exhale. Sandra Bullock carries the whole orbit.
  5. 4Moonrise Kingdom poster
Peak Wes Anderson, before the symmetry became a personality.
Highest movie.guru score here at 9.1, critics and audiences both above 90%. Guru's Take is lower, 8.2, because the whimsy occasionally needs a nap too.
  6. 3Lady Bird poster
    Lady Bird (2017)8.7
The best mother-daughter movie of the decade. Not close.
99% on Rotten Tomatoes, Metacritic 93, Guru's Take 8.9. Saoirse Ronan and Laurie Metcalf argue like real family. An audience score beating only 80% of movies is too low.
  7. 2The Babadook poster
    The Babadook (2014)7.6
The decade's best horror, and almost nobody paid to see it.
$964,413 domestic. Critics beat 95% of movies, audiences 61%. Essie Davis carries a pop-up book nightmare that's really about grief. Guru's Take 8.3, and the crowd can stay mad.
  8. 1The Cabin in the Woods poster
Better than every horror movie it's making fun of.
Audiences gave it a C CinemaScore and it beats only 48% of movies on audience scores. Guru's Take is 8.4. The crowd wanted a cabin. Drew Goddard sold them the whole building.
Change my mind. Rank these from best bedtime watch to worst nightmare fuel.

$461.94 says at least one of you starts The Babadook at bedtime and sleeps with the hallway light on.
