8 Movies From the 2000s I Like Way More Than Everyone Else Does. Fight Me on Every Single One.

Every movie here scores way lower on movie.guru than in my Guru's Take. Gaps of 1.7 to 2.6 points. I'm defending all eight.

Number one is the movie everybody loves to dunk on. I'm defending it anyway.

  1. 8War of the Worlds poster
Spielberg's purest dread machine of the decade.
Critics beat 68% of movies, audiences only 34%. Weird, since those same audiences gave it a B+ CinemaScore and $603.9 million worldwide. Tom Cruise fleeing tripods is the scariest commute ever filmed.
  2. 7Constantine poster
    Constantine (2005)4.9
Keanu in a trench coat beats most comic book movies.
A 4.9 movie.guru score for a movie with a 7.0 IMDb on 415,547 votes? Tilda Swinton plays the angel Gabriel. Rotten Tomatoes at 46% clearly missed the memo.
  3. 6Unbreakable poster
    Unbreakable (2000)5.8
The slowest superhero origin ever, and that's the point.
Audiences gave it a C CinemaScore, then it pulled $248.1 million worldwide anyway. Bruce Willis plays a security guard who's never been sick a day. It deserves way more than 5.8.
  4. 5A.I. Artificial Intelligence poster
Spielberg's saddest movie, and the C+ crowd got it wrong.
Haley Joel Osment plays a robot boy built to love, and it wrecks you. Too long in the middle, sure. Jude Law steals every scene. Worth more than a 5.5.
  5. 4The Mist poster
    The Mist (2007)5.4
The scariest thing in the fog is the grocery store crowd.
Frank Darabont trapped Thomas Jane in a supermarket for a reported $13 to 18 million. Audiences handed it a C. Marcia Gay Harden alone is worth more than a 5.4.
  6. 3American Psycho poster
    American Psycho (2000)6.3
A D CinemaScore is the funniest review this movie ever got.
Christian Bale's business card scene is peak dark comedy. Made for a reported $7 million, now sitting at 7.6 on IMDb with 863,158 votes. A 6.3 here is a joke.
  7. 2The Ring poster
    The Ring (2002)4.8
Gore Verbinski made the scariest videotape ever filmed.
Naomi Watts versus a cursed tape, $249.3 million worldwide on a reported $48 million budget. A 4.8 movie.guru score? Somebody watched it with every light in the house on.
  8. 1Hulk poster
    Hulk (2003)3.2
Ang Lee's Hulk is not a 3.2. Fight me.
Audiences beat just 10% of movies on this one. Eric Bana broods way too much. But comic panel split screens and $245.3 million worldwide? My 5.1 Take is a rescue mission.
Change my mind. Rank these from most to least underrated. Wrong answers only.

$641.29 says somebody in the comments defends Hulk harder than I just did.
