Famous isn't the same as great. These eight have huge vote counts, devoted fans and at least one problem everybody politely ignores. Let's be rude about it.
The last one has a 6.6 Guru's Take and a million angry defenders.
- 8
One great tank fight trapped inside a standard war movie.
622,741 IMDb votes for a Metacritic 64. Brad Pitt growls every line like words are rationed, and critics beat only 60% of movies here. Fans call it gritty. It's mostly loud.
- 7
A sweet sitcom that keeps flinching from its own subject.
Audiences beat 95% of movies, critics just 64%, Metacritic 58. Waititi plays imaginary Hitler as a goofball, and the tone swerves so hard you need a seatbelt.
- 6
Redux is the cut that proves editors are heroes.
A 9.4 movie.guru score, but the Guru's Take is 8.7 for a reason. The added footage slows a fever dream into a lecture. 781,057 IMDb voters sat through it anyway.
- 5
Platoon explains every feeling the camera already showed you.
$6M reported budget, $138.5M domestic. Genuinely impressive. But Charlie Sheen's narration underlines every theme in thick marker. Dafoe and Berenger deserved less voiceover. Score 9.3, Guru's Take 8.7.
- 4
Three perfect scenes and a lot of Tarantino admiring himself.
Most IMDb votes on this list at 1,827,042, yet Metacritic sits at 69. Christoph Waltz carries it. The title squad gets less to do than the poster promised.
- 3
A perfect first half followed by a different, lesser movie.
863,659 IMDb votes, an 8.4 score, and everyone quotes the same boot camp scenes. R. Lee Ermey owns the film. The Vietnam half explains that B+ CinemaScore.
- 2
The opening is untouchable. The rest coasts on that goodwill.
9.5 score, 1,671,428 IMDb votes, $482.4M worldwide. Earned. But the mission chatter in the middle sags, and the bookends pour on syrup. Even the Guru's Take is lower at 9.1.
- 1
A Mel Gibson ego trip with excellent face paint.
1,176,057 IMDb votes and an 8.3 IMDb rating, but Metacritic 68 and a 6.6 Guru's Take. The battles rule. The history and the slow-motion speeches mostly don't.
Change my mind. Rank these from most to least overrated. Wrong answers only for number one.
$1,267 says the first angry comment is just a photo of blue face paint.
