Ranked

Johnny Depp has made some all-timers. These aren't them. His eight lowest movie.guru scores, roasted with love, and yes, three are pirate sequels.

Number one cost a fortune and somehow feels like a rerun.

  1. 8Public Enemies poster
    Public Enemies (2009)5.6
Two huge stars, a great director, and a giant shrug.
Depp and Christian Bale barely share the screen, and Marion Cotillard is the only one who seems to feel anything. Audiences rank it above only 49% of notable movies.
  2. 7Sleepy Hollow poster
    Sleepy Hollow (1999)6.0
Christopher Walken snarls, says nothing, and steals the whole movie.
Tim Burton drains the color out of everything for 105 minutes, Depp plays Ichabod Crane as a gadget-obsessed science nerd, and critics rank it above 55% of notable movies.
  3. 6Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End poster
A pirate movie with the runtime of a cross-country flight.
Jack Sparrow hallucinates a whole crew of himself, easily the best idea in 169 minutes. Audiences rank it above 73% of notable movies anyway.
  4. 5Alice in Wonderland poster
A billion dollars, and the Hatter's accent still can't decide.
Depp's Mad Hatter slides into a Scottish brogue whenever he's upset, and nobody ever explains why. $1.03 billion worldwide anyway, and Metacritic gives it 53.
  5. 4Murder on the Orient Express poster
Kenneth Branagh's mustache gets top billing, and it earned it.
Depp plays Ratchett, the shady businessman nobody on board likes, and he exits early. Critics rank it above 39% of notable movies, and most of its 114 minutes is A-listers getting interviewed.
  6. 3Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas poster
A cult classic for people who never finished it.
Depp plays Raoul Duke like a wind-up toy in aviator shades, and the plot never shows up. A C+ CinemaScore, 41 on Metacritic, and 7.4 on IMDb from fans who swear it's genius.
  7. 2Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales poster
Javier Bardem's floating hair deserved a much better movie.
Critics rank it above just 15% of notable movies, the lowest mark on this list. A reported $230 to $320 million, and Jack Sparrow feels like a guest star in his own franchise.
  8. 1Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides poster
Somehow both the priciest and the sleepiest movie here.
A reported $410.6 million budget, and it plays like the line for the ride: long, slow and mostly waiting. Audiences rank it above only 48% of notable movies.
Change my mind. Defend one of these. I dare you.

$14.28 says Sleepy Hollow is secretly your favorite Tim Burton movie and you'll never admit it.
