Money doesn't mean good. 1995 proved it. Here are the year's eight biggest worldwide grosses, counting up from #8, with the scores that tell on them.

Number one won the whole year, and critics still act like it didn't.

  1. 8Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls poster
Critics hated it. Audiences didn't care. Neither did Jim Carrey.
23% on Rotten Tomatoes and a 4.4 movie.guru score, yet $212.4 million worldwide on a reported $30M budget. Carrey's face did all the heavy lifting, and the plot just watched.
  2. 7Braveheart poster
    Braveheart (1995)7.9
A crowd favorite that loves Mel Gibson more than you do.
8.3 on IMDb from 1.17 million voters, but Metacritic stopped at 68. Guru's Take is a 6.6: big speeches, bigger kilts, and the director keeps finding his own slow motion close-ups.
  3. 6Jumanji poster
    Jumanji (1995)5.2
Critics undersold it. This board game is a blast.
Metacritic gave it a 41. Audiences gave it an A minus CinemaScore and $262.8 million worldwide. Robin Williams plus a stampede through the living room beats any review.
  4. 5Seven poster
    Seven (1995)7.7
The best movie on this list, and it's not close.
Guru's Take: 9.0. Over 2 million IMDb votes at 8.6. Made on a reported $33M, it pulled $329.8 million worldwide while being the gloomiest thing in any 1995 multiplex.
  5. 4Batman Forever poster
    Batman Forever (1995)3.4
The worst movie here made $336 million. Let that sink in.
A 3.4 movie.guru score, firmly Poor. Audiences beat only 25% of it. Still $336.6 million worldwide, with Jim Carrey's Riddler apparently running on nine espressos and a neon sign.
  6. 3GoldenEye poster
    GoldenEye (1995)7.2
The Bond reboot that actually worked. Brosnan earned the tux.
81% on Rotten Tomatoes and $352.2 million worldwide on a reported $60M. Guru's Take is 7.7, because Sean Bean finally gave Bond a villain who felt like a real problem.
  7. 2Apollo 13 poster
    Apollo 13 (1995)8.9
Everyone knows how it ends. You'll still sweat through your shirt.
8.9 movie.guru score, 94% on Rotten Tomatoes, an A CinemaScore. Ron Howard made engineers with duct tape the tensest thing of 1995, and $355.8 million worldwide still only got second.
  8. 1Die Hard with a Vengeance poster
The year's biggest movie, and honestly, it earned the crown.
$366.1 million worldwide, top of 1995. Critics shrugged at 60% on Rotten Tomatoes, but audiences beat 80% of movies. Willis and Samuel L. Jackson yelling across New York is legit fun.
Change my mind. Rank these from best to worst. Wrong answers only.

$366.13 says you scroll back up just to be mad that Apollo 13 finished second.
