The 8 Biggest Movies of 2017, and Whether They Were Any Good

Eight movies cleared $820 million worldwide in 2017. The box office says they're all winners. The scores disagree, and so do I.

#1 made the most money here and still split its own fans in half.

  1. 8Wonder Woman poster
    Wonder Woman (2017)8.3
Great origin story, and still a notch overrated.
$824 million worldwide, 93% on Rotten Tomatoes, an A CinemaScore. Earned. My 7.4 sits under the 8.3 because the climax turns into a generic CGI boss fight.
  2. 7Thor: Ragnarok poster
    Thor: Ragnarok (2017)8.7
Best movie on this list, and it's not that close.
Highest movie.guru score here at 8.7, and audiences beat 91% of movies. Taika Waititi made Thor a comedy and pulled $855 million. The jokes do flatten every sad beat, though.
  3. 6Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 poster
Crowds loved it. It's the most overstuffed sequel here.
Audiences beat 90% of movies, critics only 70%. $864 million on a reported $200M budget. My 6.8 says it keeps pausing the fun for another feelings speech.
  4. 5Spider-Man: Homecoming poster
Most rewatchable superhero movie of 2017. Keaton carries it.
8.5 movie.guru score and $881 million worldwide. Michael Keaton's villain is the best thing in it. Tom Holland's great, but the movie leans on its Avengers ties like a crutch.
  5. 4Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle poster
Smartest money move of 2017. Not the smartest movie.
$963 million worldwide on a reported $90M budget. That's nuts. The 6.6 is fair: four stars riffing in a jungle is fun once, kinda thin on a rewatch.
  6. 3The Fate of the Furious poster
Made $1.24 billion. Still the weakest movie here.
Lowest movie.guru score on the list at 6.2, and my take is 5.4. Only $226 million came from domestic. The rest of the planet just really loves Vin Diesel.
  7. 2Beauty and the Beast poster
A very expensive photocopy of a better cartoon.
$1.27 billion worldwide on a reported $160M to $255M budget. Critics beat only 57% of movies. My 6.2 says it's the same songs, louder, with less magic.
  8. 1Star Wars: The Last Jedi poster
Biggest movie of 2017, and better than its reputation.
$1.33 billion worldwide. Critics beat 90% of movies, audiences only 55%. My 6.9 says the bold swings land more than they miss. The casino detour still drags.
Change my mind. Rank these eight from most to least deserving of their box office. Wrong answers only.

$1,334 says someone in the comments defends the casino planet before lunch.
