Happy Halloween. The scariest thing here is a billion-dollar movie with a 42% on Rotten Tomatoes. Jack Black's top 8, ranked by movie.guru score.

Number one is obvious. Saying nothing else comes close is what starts fights.

  1. 8The Super Mario Galaxy Movie poster
A billion dollars can't buy a better Rotten Tomatoes score.
$1.01 billion worldwide. Rotten Tomatoes 42%, Metacritic 37. Audiences still handed it an A− CinemaScore, so critics and crowds watched two different movies.
  2. 7Kung Fu Panda 4 poster
    Kung Fu Panda 4 (2024)5.7
The fourth bowl of noodles still tastes fine. Barely.
A 5.7 movie.guru score, a hair above the 5.5 median. It still pulled $548 million worldwide on a reported $85M budget. Po carries it on vibes alone.
  3. 6The Holiday poster
    The Holiday (2006)6.1
Critics shrugged. Every December, your aunt overrules them.
Rotten Tomatoes 51%, but IMDb 7.0 from 372,460 voters. Jack Black as a Nancy Meyers romantic lead should not work. It kinda does.
  4. 5Jumanji: The Next Level poster
Same game, fewer surprises, still a fine Saturday.
$801.7 million worldwide, down from the first one's $962.5 million. A 72% on Rotten Tomatoes. The avatar-swap gag is running on fumes by now.
  5. 4Tropic Thunder poster
    Tropic Thunder (2008)6.5
Ranked too low. The data can't take a joke.
Critics gave it 82% on Rotten Tomatoes, crowds gave it a B CinemaScore. movie.guru score 6.5, Guru's Take 7.3. Hollywood roasting itself has never been sharper.
  6. 3Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle poster
Nobody asked for a Jumanji reboot. Everybody was wrong.
$962.5 million worldwide on a reported $90M budget, plus 77% on Rotten Tomatoes. Jack Black playing a teenager trapped in his avatar is the whole engine.
  7. 2King Kong poster
    King Kong (2005)6.9
Peter Jackson made a monster epic, then forgot to stop.
Metacritic 81 and a reported $207M budget. Critics' score beats 85% of movies, audiences only 54%. Jack Black playing a shady filmmaker totally straight is the secret weapon.
  8. 1School of Rock poster
    School of Rock (2003)7.5
His best movie, and it isn't even close.
92% on Rotten Tomatoes, Metacritic 82, a 7.5 movie.guru score. Guru's Take: 8.2. It made $131 million worldwide on a reported $35M budget. Every other role chases this one.
Change my mind. Rank these from most to least Jack Black. Wrong answers only.

$1276 says someone asks where Nacho Libre is within the first ten minutes.
