2015 was the year a billion dollars became a participation trophy. Five of these eight crossed it. Here's which ones actually earned the hype, ranked by worldwide gross.

Number one made two billion dollars, and I'm still going to complain about it.

  1. 8The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2 poster
Splitting the last book in two drained the finale dry.
$684.5 million worldwide and a 5.9 movie.guru score. Lots of tunnels, lots of somber standing around, and the big war arrives already exhausted.
  2. 7Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation poster
The best movie on this list. Yes, better than Star Wars.
Guru's Take: 8.6, highest here. 94% on Rotten Tomatoes, only $195 million domestic. Rebecca Ferguson walked in and stole a Tom Cruise movie from Tom Cruise.
  3. 6Spectre poster
    Spectre (2015)5.8
Gorgeous, pricey, and weirdly sleepy for a Bond movie.
Reported budget of $245 to 300 million, $880.7 million worldwide, 5.8 movie.guru score. Christoph Waltz deserved a villain with more to do than lurk in shadows.
  4. 5Minions poster
    Minions (2015)5.0
Lowest score here. A billion dollars anyway. The kids won.
$1.16 billion worldwide on a reported $74 million budget, with a 5.0 movie.guru score. Pure yellow gibberish for a full movie, and the gibberish carried it.
  5. 4Avengers: Age of Ultron poster
Audiences loved it way more than it deserved.
Audiences beat 83% of movies, critics only 60%. Guru's Take: 5.8. Half the runtime is setting up sequels that hadn't been made yet.
  6. 3Furious 7 poster
    Furious 7 (2015)7.8
Pure nonsense physics, and it earned every single cent.
$1.52 billion worldwide and a 7.8 movie.guru score. Gravity filed a complaint. James Wan ignored it, and audiences still rated it above 80% of movies.
  7. 2Jurassic World poster
    Jurassic World (2015)6.9
Second-biggest movie of the year, and it's mostly nostalgia.
$1.67 billion worldwide, a 59 on Metacritic, Guru's Take: 5.4. Chris Pratt holds one hand up at raptors and the theme park memories do the rest.
  8. 1Star Wars: The Force Awakens poster
Highest score on the list. Still a greatest-hits cover album.
8.9 movie.guru score and $2.07 billion worldwide. Adam Driver is legit great. Everything else is A New Hope with the furniture moved. Guru's Take: 7.5.
Change my mind. Rank these from most to least deserving of their box office.

$317.43 says the first reply defends Force Awakens by typing the words 'but Adam Driver' and nothing else.
